140. This setting, both maternal and ecclesial, in which the dialogue between the Lord and his people takes place, should be encouraged by the closeness of the preacher, the warmth of his tone of voice, the unpretentiousness of his manner of speaking, the joy of his gestures. Even if the homily at times may be somewhat tedious, if this maternal and ecclesial spirit is present, it will always bear fruit, just as the tedious counsels of a mother bear fruit, in due time, in the hearts of her children.
189. Solidarity is a spontaneous reaction by those who recognize that the social function of property and the universal destination of goods are realities which come before private property. The private ownership of goods is justified by the need to protect and increase them, so that they can better serve the common good; for this reason, solidarity must be lived as the decision to restore to the poor what belongs to them. These convictions and habits of solidarity, when they are put into practice, open the way to other structural transformations and make them possible. Changing structures without generating new convictions and attitudes will only ensure that those same structures will become, sooner or later, corrupt, oppressive and ineffectual.

218. Peace in society cannot be understood as pacification or the mere absence of violence resulting from the domination of one part of society over others. Nor does true peace act as a pretext for justifying a social structure which silences or appeases the poor, so that the more affluent can placidly support their lifestyle while others have to make do as they can. Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for the poor and human rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of creating a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority. The dignity of the human person and the common good rank higher than the comfort of those who refuse to renounce their privileges. When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.
Vigilamus continued over the Mediterranean to Libya, and then across the Sahara Desert, flying for three days and nights at an altitude of 5km, until he reached Southern Chad. Here he recuperated for a couple of months before flying on to the Congo Basin, arriving at his destination in mid-October.
Michael Arenswald (d. 1942) was part of the engineering detachment of the German Heavy Artillery Battalion Dora. He was part of an attack on a pair of the Race's ships which had landed on southern steppe of the Soviet Union, successfully destroying the 67th Emperor Sohrheb and the 56th Emperor Jossano. They were able to get off six shots in all before the Race bombed the train carrying them.[8]
Avram was a Jewish guerrilla during both Second World War and the Race Invasion of Tosev 3. He was part of Casimir's group near Hrubieszów, Poland. In 1944, he and a Pole named Wladeslaw escorted Soviet pilot Ludmila Gorbunova through Poland to a German position outside Warsaw so she might gain access to a plane.[9] While the way was arduous, they arrived at their destination unharmed.[10]
Otto Chase was a cement worker from Dixon, Illinois. When his place of employment was destroyed by the Race's Conquest Fleet in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army.[36] He saw combat against the Race with Sam Yeager and Mutt Daniels. Yeager convinced Chase of the value of treating captured members of the Race humanely as prisoners of war.[37]
Major Kapellmeister was a German officer stationed at the port of Kristiansand, Norway, in 1944. He inspected the credentials of George Bagnall, Ken Embry, and Jerome Jones, to approve their repatriation to England after the Peace of Cairo. Despite his name, Kapellmeister's voice was not at all musical.[96]
Panagiotis Mavrogordato was a Greek sailor and smuggler who captained the Naxos. He transported Moishe, Rivka, and Reuven Russie from Gibraltar to Palestine in his vessel. Moishe and Mavrogordato discovered that German was their only language in common. However, Reuven, who had played with the Greek Stephanopoulos twins in London, was able to follow Mavrogordato's off-color "sailor talk," much to his father's chagrin.[132] Mavrogordato witnessed the nuclear destruction of Rome, where he had intended to put to port and sell ginger to soldiers of the Race occupying the city.[133] Eventually, he unloaded the Russies in Haifa.[134]
Sergeant Klaus Meinecke was a German panzer gunner.[137] When the Race invaded in mid-1942, Meinecke was serving in the Afrika Korps against the British. Withdrawn with the rest of the Korps, Meinecke was assigned to Colonel Heinrich Jäger's Panther in 1943 during the fighting in Alsace-Lorraine. Shortly before one attack, Meinecke joked that his regimental commander had the deutsche Blick ('German glance') due to Jäger's constant scanning for Race killercraft, then explained how first the British and then the Lizards had dominated the skies in North Africa.[138] During a subsequent diversionary attack when Otto Skorzeny was stealing a Lizard landcruiser, Meinecke managed a rare feat by destroying a Race infantry fighting vehicle with a well-placed round from his Panther's gun.[139]
While transferring Teerts to the custody of the Japanese navy, Okamoto's vehicle was knocked over by a Race air-raid on Tokyo. Okamoto was injured and knocked unconscious when the car overturned, but Teerts remained conscious and unhurt.[151] He escaped and was finally rescued by the Race, who then destroyed Tokyo (and presumably Okamoto, if he had not already died of his wounds) with an explosive-metal bomb.[152]
Kliment Yegorevich Pavlyuchenko was the headman of a collective farm in the Ukraine. In 1942, after the Race invaded Earth, Pavlyuchenko gave temporary shelter to Heinrich Jäger and Georg Schultz, who'd survived their first battle with the Race not long before, even managing to destroy a Race landcruiser. They were picked up by Soviet pilot Ludmila Gorbunova, who was anxious to know how they'd killed a landcruiser.[163]
Richard Peterson was a technician with the USA's atomic bomb project in Denver in 1944. Leslie Groves considered Peterson a "hopeless stick-in-the-mud". He was of the opinion that Groves' scheme for increasing plutonium production while containing radioactive waste would be incredibly difficult given the lack of personnel. Groves reminded Peterson that should any radioactive waste find its way into the South Platte River, the Race would most likely detect it, and conclude that Denver was the center of US atomic production and destroy the city. Groves ordered Peterson to train people to implement the containment, and then pointedly ignored Peterson until he left Groves' office.[164]
Dieter Schmidt (d. 1942) was the driver of Major Heinrich Jäger's Panzer.[191] While he survived the first encounter the Sixteenth Panzer Division had with the Race in Ukraine[192], and was even able to escape when the Panzer was destroyed in a subsequent battle,[193] Schmidt died not long after.[194]
Gerald Sebring (d. 1942[?]) was an American physicist from Berkeley, California. He worked with the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. He had intended to return to Berkeley in the summer of 1942 to conduct research and marry a colleague's secretary; his plans were preempted when the arrival of the Race's Conquest Fleet made travel all but impossible. Sebring instead volunteered to travel to Washington, DC to meet with government officials and remind them that defending Chicago long enough for the physicists to continue their research was all-important.[198] Unfortunately, no one in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where the War Department had relocated after the destruction of Washington by one of the Race's explosive-metal bombs, had seen or heard from him. It was assumed the train on which he'd been traveling had been destroyed and he'd been killed.[199]
Old Sun was a tailor in Liu Han's village during World War II. He informed Liu Han that a Japanese bombing raid had destroyed the home of the county head, Tang Wen Lan, and almost certainly killed him. Old Sun sanguinely announced he would be putting on white to "mourn" the despised county head. However, when the village apothecary Yi Min announced that Japanese ground forces would be attacking the village, Old Sun refused to leave his plot.[220]

It's fairly unnecessary to give information on what flights, car etc. we booked, because there are lots of websites about it on the internet. I think it's clear that Fuerteventura is a rather cheap destination.Itinerary:20th March- Day of arrival, no birding21st March- Costa Calma Plains (Isthmo de la Pared), Rosa de Catalina Garcia, Los Molinos22nd March- Costa Calma Plains, Costa Calma Forest, Barranco de la Torre, pools nearby road FV-223rd March- Playa de Sotavento, Puerto del Rosario, Rosa del Taro, plains near Triquivijate (see also Gosney), La Lajita24th March- Corralejo, Rosa de Los Negrines, La Vega de Rio de las Palmas, Rosa de Catalina Garcia25th March- Playa de Sotavento, La Lajita Zoo26th March- Costa Calma Plains27th March- Day of departureBirding Sites:Costa Calma Plains- very good site for all of the desert species. Come here in the early morning because of disturbing walkers (especially dog-walkers), joggers etc. We found this area both nice and productive, but failed to see Stone Curlew. Very common species are Hoopoe, Southern Grey Shrike and of course Lesser Short-toed Lark. Quite easy to see are also Houbara Bustard and Cream-coloured Courser.Rosa de Catalina Garcia- we found this to be the best wetland-site on Fuerteventura. Highlights were Purple Heron, Collared Pratincole, Ruddy Shelduck with chicks and a variety of waders (see also systematic list).Los Molinos- this site was rather disappointing though we had Canary Islands Chat, Ruddy Shelduck, Egyptian Vulture and some waders as well as Barbary Falcon and a huge flock of swifts and hirundines. But the vegetation was dead (see also earlier trip reports) and no Marbled or other ducks around.Costa Calma Forest- as this is one of the few "green" sites, birds here mainly include passerines like Goldfinch, Linnet and some warblers.Barranco de la Torre- a very nice landscape with some good birds. Trumpeter Finch and Canary Islands Chat are both seen with ease. We had no Barbary Partridges and Egyptian Vultures here, but lots of Barbary Ground Squirrels.Near the FV-2 cutting the Barranco there's a restaurant with a nearby pool. When we appeared at the pool it held some waders, hirundines and a pair of Ruddy Shelduck.Playa de Sotavento - situated between Casas Risco del Paso and Hotel Sol Gorriones and so one of the best sites for gulls, terns, waders etc, but it is essential to come in the early morning to avoid flocks of tourists instead of birds.Puerto del Rosario - the little "lagoons" at the harbour district can be good for waders, roosting gulls/terns. Furthermore seawatching is a good alternative as we had some Cory's Shearwaters coming very close to the shoreline.Rosa del Taro- this little pool with its reedbed and nearby trees near Triquivijate hosted some interesting passerines. Red-throated Pipit, Song Thrush, Redwing, Subalpine Warbler, Blue Tit were all observed here.Area around La Lajita/Barranco- we looked for Barbary Partridge here without any results. We had Laughing Dove and possible African Collared Dove (domestic form).Rosa de Los Negrines- this site near La Oliva produced good views of Houbara Bustard, Cream-coloured Courser and Trumpeter Finch.La Vega de Rio de las Palma - a beautiful valley with nice birds. A must for Fuerteventura-Visitors! Although the Embalse at the end of the river is dry this site is worth at least one visit. Birds here included Egyptian Vulture at a regular roosting-site in the cliffs, many Turtle Doves, Barbary Partridge, Western Bonelli's Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Blue Tit, Robin etc.Systematic birdlist (also escapes/not mentioned the various Fuerteventura-subspecies) 2ff7e9595c
